In Bollywood, clashes between a director’s ego and a star’s whims are nothing new. As today’s top actress Deepika Padukone is reportedly walking out of director Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s (of Animal fame) film Spirit, a veteran filmmaker shared an old tale with us — a story about how a rift between a successful director Vijay Bhatt and superstar Raj Kapoor once led to the creation of the iconic film Baiju Bawra. Reportedly, Vijay Bhatt cast a struggling newcomer in place of Raj Kapoor — not just to make a film, but to prove a point.

Vijay Bhatt’s Lost Film Dream With Raj Kapoor

Veteran filmmaker Vijay Bhatt — known for classics like Ram Rajya, Baiju Bawra, Goonj Uthi Shehnai, and Himalaya Ki God Mein — was deeply respected in the industry. (Incidentally, Ram Rajya is said to be the only film Mahatma Gandhi ever watched.) Bhatt sahab had poured his heart into developing a script that he believed could become a blockbuster. Confident in his vision, he approached the Kapoor family’s crown jewel, Raj Kapoor, to play the lead.

Raj Kapoor

Raj Kapoor liked the story but suggested a few changes. Vijay Bhatt, however, stood his ground. Despite the story being penned by another writer, Bhatt refused to alter the narrative. What started as a creative disagreement soon turned into an ego clash. Eventually, Raj Kapoor refused to work in Bhatt’s film.

They met again later to discuss the project, but nothing changed. Raj Kapoor reiterated, “Change the story,” and Bhatt once again replied, “That won’t happen.” Though Bhatt tried to convince Kapoor, things didn’t work out, and Kapoor walked away from the project. Bhatt, however, wasn’t willing to give up on his film. Instead, he set out to find a new actor — someone who could carry the story without any starry baggage.

His search ended when he met a lesser-known actor who had only done small roles in films. Bhatt cast this struggling actor in the lead — making a strong statement that he didn’t need a superstar to tell his story. Many in the film industry, including those close to Bhatt, were shocked by the decision. They doubted his judgment, saying it was a mistake to cast someone who was practically a junior artist at the time. But Bhatt ignored the criticism and went ahead with his conviction.

Sixty Years of Baiju Bawra - Open The Magazine

When the film Baiju Bawra released, it was initially declared a flop. Many mocked both Vijay Bhatt and his choice of a lead actor. But then, something miraculous happened — the film gradually picked up momentum. Word-of-mouth spread, and it started gaining traction. Eventually, it went on to become not just a hit, but a blockbuster. The struggling actor Vijay Bhatt had cast? None other than Bharat Bhushan — who became a star overnight.

The film's success didn’t stop there. Baiju Bawra ran in theatres for two whole years, and its legacy continues to this day. The film starred Bharat Bhushan opposite Meena Kumari and became a shining example of how conviction and courage can triumph over industry norms.
